Le Marche region produces a large variety of
wines including 13 that carry the
D.O.C. label. Many of these wines are a well-kept secret and in the past
have been little known outside of Italy. However,
the region's producers have started attracting attention overseas and full
bodied Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno wines are now fetching increasingly
higher prices.
But the best known of Le Marche's wines, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is becoming a
favourite of wine stockists and restaurants throughout Europe and North
America. The
Verdicchio vineyards are around the lovely medieval town of
Jesi found just inland from Ancona, and also cover the hillsides around the Cantinone.
Of particular interest, and unique to a small red-wine producing area is
the Lacrima di Morro D'Alba.
