Le Marche

The region of Le Marche (pronounced "lay mar-kay") lies to the east of Tuscany and Umbria in Central Italy. By comparison, Le Marche is unspoilt and a tourist's dream. Historic towns, theatre, museums, hill-top villages, huge underground caverns, and exquisite white sand beaches are all close at hand and can be discovered down uncrowded roads.

Cupramontana is one of a number of hilltop towns in central Marche known as the Castelli di Jesi. It is sited high in the Esino hills directly west (inland) from Ancona. Of pre-Roman origin, Cupramontana is today an important agricultural centre, hill-town and summer resort. Above all though it is the "capital" of Verdicchio wine and possesses a novel International Museum of Wine Labels. The main sights of the town are the Roman water tank called "barlozzo", the Collegiate Church (18th century), the abbey of the Blessed Alessio (14th century) and the Museum of Wine Labels.

Il Vecchio Cantinone

Literal translation is the "The Antique Cellar", the buildings as they now stand today were erected in the years 1860 to1905 by an important local producer of Verdicchio wine. This large farmhouse, built in stone, was so called to acknowledge the wine-making tradition of the Marche countryside. The buildings were used as a co-operative, a place where the nearby vinters bought their produce to be converted into the local verdicchio wine.
